Ethnic costumes: DAO ETHNIC GROUP (DAO TIỀN)

CHARACTERISTIC DESCRIPTION

The traditional attire of the Dao Khâu ethnic group is not as vibrant as some other Dao subgroups but rather simple the dominant color being indigo. Dao ethnic women usually wear a long tunic, and the front flap is often folded backward with a tied waistband. The Dao Khâu people’s tunic is long, reaching down to the ankles, with the flap meticulously embroidered. The edges are adorned with red flower buds and silver buttons. The neckline is designed in a round shape, and the back is adorned with seven white silver buttons along with pink threads. On both sides of the tunic, from the neckline to the waist, are brown threads with the cuff of the sleeves adorned with green fabric. At the back of the tunic, there is a cluster of five silver coins, each attached to a string of multicolored cơm seeds.
The trousers of Dao Khâu people are crafted in the “chân què” style, with the crotch low and wide. When worn, the waistband crosses diagonally on both sides and is tightly fastened on the outside with a red fabric belt. The trousers are embroidered predominantly in white and orange, a unique feature distinguishing them from Dao people in other regions who often use black for their clothing. The trousers showcase intricate patterns, with various motifs such as grass, leaves, birds, or any objects that people in this community find familiar in their daily lives.
