CHARACTERISTIC DESCRIPTION

The costumes of the Giáy people are similar to those of the Hán people. Women also wear trousers like men, but the fabric is black and softer, resembling satin. In the past, both men and women only wore self-woven and indigo-dyed cotton fabric. The distinctive feature of women's trousers is that the waistband can be made of colored fabric, especially red, and has a drawstring, while men only cross and use a belt. Women's shirts have various colors, especially black and all other colors except for white. The shirts are buttoned with fabric or silver buttons on the right side, have a standing collar, and have different colored fabric borders on the button flap. Nowadays, most girls wear shirts with a collar, sleeve border, and hem in various colors. Nowadays, most girls wear shirts with a colored collar, sleeve border, and hem in various colors. In the past, border patterns were used to distinguish between the old and the young, with wide borders indicating old age and narrow ones indicating youth. Dark colors are old; bright colors are young. The shirts of women in the past had long hems, but now they are shorter, reaching the waist.
Women's costumes also include a bunch of red yarn mixed with hair (previously made from self-dyed cotton). It is slightly longer than the hair to wrap around the head, followed by a square scarf (similar to a men’s headscarf). Later, they used square scarves like the Kinh people.
In terms of jewelry, they have silver or gold earrings, necklaces, bracelets, a "xả tích" silver chain, and silver or gold rings. Earrings and bracelets are worn regularly, while the rest are worn on special occasions such as Vietnamese New Year, festivals, weddings, or when traveling to other regions. In the marriage proposal costumes of the Giáy people, a pair of gold or silver earrings, a pair of bracelets, a silver necklace, and a gold ring are essential.
