Ethnic costumes: KHÁNG ETHNIC GROUP

CHARACTERISTIC DESCRIPTION

Women of the Khang ethnic group, from babies to the elderly, all tie their hair on the top of their heads. In contrast, Thái ethnic women only do it after marriage. In the past, Kháng women used to blacken their teeth and chew betel nuts, while Kháng men tied their hair at the back of the neck. Nowadays, these customs are gradually fading away.
The daily costumes of Kháng women include a headscarf, shirt, yếm “yếm” (a type of camisole), skirt, belt, "xà cạp", hairpin, "xà tích" and a shoulder bag.
The headscarf (khan hàng hua) is a long scarf commonly used in daily life as well as at weddings and festivals. It is made of black indigo-dyed fabric, and the two corners at the head of the scarf are decorated with two embroidered four-petal flowers in green and red thread. In the Kháng region, this type of floral pattern is referred to as "ba piêu" (bợ leaf, a type of plant that grows in the fields and can be used to make soup). The two ends of the scarf are adorned with decorative stitches or tufts of yarn.
According to Khang beliefs, both men and women should own an Áo dài to wear on important occasions such as weddings, festivals, and Lunar New Year, and to keep for burial. Therefore, the “Áo dài” is considered a key element in the traditional festive and wedding costumes of the Kháng people.
The “Áo dài” (uốp lường) is tailored in a five-panel style from indigo-dyed cotton fabric, with a length of 95–100 cm and a width of 55–58 cm. The two front and back panels are of equal length. The additional front panel has a small pocket (thong toác uốp), a round collar that is 3cm high, and is fastened with five copper buttons on the right side. The dress has a deep slit of 50–55 cm. The long, narrow sleeves have a width of 12cm. Nowadays, this traditional costume is rarely worn. They only wear them for receiving the bride and for burial ceremonies. Many young couples no longer use this type of attire on their wedding day.
