Ethnic costumes: KHƠ MÚ ETHNIC GROUP

CHARACTERISTIC DESCRIPTION

The traditional costumes of Khơ Mú women include dress, blouse, “yếm” (a type of camisole), belt, headscarf, and “xả”. The women's blouse is a short black indigo fabric with a heart-shaped neckline, a split at the chest, and a row of rectangular silver or aluminum buttons (referred to as "má pám"). The blouse’s side flaps are often sewn with strips of different-colored fabric and attached with circular silver or aluminum buttons running vertically from top to bottom.
The headscarf (piêu) of Khơ Mú women is a piece of black indigo fabric with square-shaped embroidered patterns, additional red fabric, and tassels at both ends. When wearing the headscarf, the embroidered patterns and tassels are displayed prominently on the forehead. Their skirts, similar to those of Thái women, are black indigo. The “yếm” is worn underneath the blouse, featuring embroidered patterns at the neckline and ties at the neck and back. There are two types of belts. Normally, a regular one is made of dyed silk in yellow or green. For those who are well-off, they attach consecutive circular silver pieces. When tying the belt, they usually hide the end of the belt, unlike in other ethnic groups where it is often displayed.
The “xà cạp" is made of black chàm fabric and has red or green fabric along the edges. When used, each leg will be wound in one direction, creating a beautiful symmetry.
The Khơ Mú women’s traditional jewelry consists of necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and hairpins. However, the most unique and ancient accessory is the belt made from seashells wrapped around the waist, a distinctive feature still observed today. Wealthier Khơ Mú women wrap a white silver “xà tích” string (a betel chewing tool) around their waist.
