Ethnic costumes: MẢNG ETHNIC GROUP

CHARACTERISTIC DESCRIPTION

The traditional attire of Mảng women consists of two basic parts: the upper part includes a “chẽn” long-sleeved blouse with a short body reaching just below the waist, intricately decorated with rows of silver buttons or white brass buttons (nhàn hồ) and skillfully sewn colored threads. Worn underneath is a thin garment, sometimes just a piece of fabric wrapped around the body. After the long-sleeved blouse is worn over it, the lower part of the undergarment extends down to the waist, seamlessly connecting with the black gathered skirt below. The skirt (sa hìn) is wrapped around the body in approximately two to three layers, typically dyed black and cascading down near the ankles. The Mảng women's skirt is comfortable and spacious, not tightly fitted like the skirts worn by the Thái people. Additionally, they wrap a white cloth adorned with red, green, and yellow geometric patterns around the outside, extending from the chest down to near the knees, serving both as a means of warmth and contributing to the overall neatness of the attire.
As for the “chẽn” short-sleeved blouse, it is often extensively decorated with numerous buttons and pieces of silver on the front part of the garment, especially along the two edges, the button rows, and the buttonholes. The buttons and silver pieces vary in size and are symmetrically arranged with an intentional design. The floral patterns used form a background divided into multiple rows of various sizes, both horizontally and vertically, creating a relatively organized and aesthetically pleasing layout.
Hair and hair decorations of Mảng women not only contribute to neatness and convenience in their production and daily activities but also harmonize with the overall attire. They often tie their hair up at the top of the head with a large hair tie (pằng xể nang), embellished with threads adorned with colorful beads in green, red, white, black, yellow, etc. The two ends of that hair tie leave the thread free to form large, brightly colored flowers, usually red.
The common jewelry for Mảng women includes bracelets (ma toỏng), necklaces (ma toỏng lô), and rings (ma leo). Mảng women typically do not sew their own clothing, so they often buy garments from the Thái people. Therefore, the style, materials, and sometimes certain details of patterns and sewing techniques are influenced by the Thái people. In the past, both men and women would get their chins tattooed when they reached a certain age.
