CHARACTERISTIC DESCRIPTION

The daily costumes of Thái trắng women in Lai Châu consist of a blouse, a belt, and a long skirt (they do not wear headscarves).
The blouse (xửa) is made from white self-woven fabric to maintain the natural color of the cotton. The blouse is crafted in a four-panel style, measuring 50cm in length and 37cm in width, with no slit at the hem. When worn, it fits closely to the body, and the heart-shaped neckline is seamlessly attached to the chest. The chest panel is a black fabric strip, 2.4cm wide, running from the right hem to the left hem of the blouse. The sleeves are connected to the body, with a tapered section in the middle of the arms, narrowing towards the hands. Similar to the Thái đen women's blouse, the Thái trắng women's blouse also features silver (now white metal) buttons, with various designs such as tortoise shells and butterflies intricately engraved. The number of butterfly sets must be odd, typically 11-13 buttons. Children's blouses have fewer buttons, usually 7 or 9 sets.
The skirt (xin) is made of black indigo fabric, in a tube-shaped design. It has three parts: the waistband, the body, and the hem. The waistband (hô xin) is made of raw blue-dyed fabric, 10cm high. The skirt’s body (pưn xin) is assembled from four pieces of raw black-dyed fabric, each 37cm wide, and the length of the body is 90cm.
The hem (pàn xin) is folded back about 2cm and sewn. The Thái trắng women's skirt is not decorated with any patterns. When worn, the two points of the waist are snug against the body along the right side, and the excess fabric is folded forward over the abdomen and tightly wrapped with a belt on the outside, pulling the hem of the blouse up. The belt (si lôông bứng) is made of silk or phin fabric, with colors such as yellow, green, red, and black. It is 100cm long, consisting of two layers of fabric, with the inner layer (left side) being black phin fabric, and the outer layer (right side) made of a different colored fabric.
