Ethnic costumes: LA HỦ ETHNIC GROUP

CHARACTERISTIC DESCRIPTION

La Hủ men’s clothing is similar to that of other ethnic groups in the Northwest region, with garments typically black or indigo. In daily life, La Hủ men wear sleeveless and open-necked shirts. There are both five-panel and four-panel shirts, with the latter having an open neck. The buttoned breast flap is made of fabric. The shirts are somewhat narrow horizontally, emphasizing the robust appearance of La Hủ men. The trousers of La Hủ men are designed with the “đũng chân què” style and the waistband is folded down. When worn, the waistband is folded back and tightened with an external fabric belt. The belt is typically in black or indigo fabrics, and its length is almost two meters, equivalent to the traditional measurement of nine fingers, about 9 cm. It not only serves to keep the trousers securely in place but also contributes to the robust posture of men.
During festivals, the traditional costumes for La Hủ men are either a new set of clothes or well-maintained garments that still retain their original colors. Festival attire is not overly elaborate, and the entire ensemble is either black or indigo. The shirts are typically designed with open sleeves. The inner garment often features pockets, similar to wedding attire, and the trousers are wide-legged “chân què cạp lá toạ” style with a folded waistband. La Hủ people have a habit of soaking their clothes in a solution of indigo water after washing, ensuring that the indigo fabric maintains its fresh appearance despite prolonged use.
